I recently picked up this movie from the
library called "The Name of the Rose" which is based on a novel by Umberto Eco. The movie is about a series of deaths in a 14th century monastery which the cleric William of Baskerville starts to investigate. He later finds out that the person responsible for the deaths was someone who doesn't want the others to read the ancient books which are preserved in the library, especially one by Aristotle which talks about humor & religious belief. There can't be anything sacred if there is humor. And somehow I felt that there is a direct correlation between that and
the way things are in the IT industry as I know it. Humor at the work place is not welcome. If somebody's humorous then he's not serious about work. Work is a serious thing, according to them. So save the humor for later. And how do you keep somebody away from stretching his/her cheek-bones? Simple - make them follow "processes". If they're not doing it, make sure you make them adhere. But why do we need processes? Because you can't get work done if you don't have a process. And what exactly is this work that needs to get done? Well, some activity that you spend time on. So, you mean something that is measured by the hours? Yes, of course.
Quantity is more important than Quality. Let me put it another way, Servings are more important than taste. Or, the number of words are more important than the meaning.
And it's really really sad.
